Colored Light Film for Headlights and Tail Lights

Colored reflective film is a type of vehicle modification that combines a radical style change with passive safety. The one modifies the colour of the Headlights and acts as an active reflector of incoming light, making the car’s contours more noticeable at night. This remedy provides it with a unique appearance while preserving the functionality of the lighting objects.

What Colored LPF Is Used For

Installing colored reflective film is, above all, a way to deeply personalize your car, allowing you to radically change its appearance. Owners choose this material to create a unique style when standard factory options seem too ordinary to them. A wide variety of colors is available:

  • black;
  • blue;
  • green;
  • grey;
  • purple;
  • red;
  • yellow;
  • chameleon.

The film can effectively hide minor defects in old headlights or completely change their tint, giving them a fresh, attractive look.

Headlights and Tail Lights

Headlights and taillights are also covered with two basic types of coating, thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and decorative vinyl. Vinyl films are purely aesthetic as they enable you to change the colour or the tint of the lights, but they have virtually none of the protective qualities. Vinyl is flimsy and fades easily in the sun, and it cracks when temperatures change.

The TPU protective film comprises several functional layers, with a total thickness of 150 to 300 microns. The base consists of a shock-absorbing polyurethane layer approximately 0.15-0.2 mm thick. This layer is responsible for absorbing impacts from gravel and providing resistance to UV radiation. Beneath it is a transparent acrylic adhesive that maintains the material’s flexibility.

The top layer, Top Coat, has pronounced hydrophobic properties, which greatly simplify cleaning the optics and protect them from stubborn stains or chemical burns caused by road chemicals. Thanks to its multi-layer structure, the colored TPU changes the appearance of components and creates a physical shield that can save up to a thousand dollars annually by eliminating the need for polishing.

Local Rules in Road Use

In addition to headlights, polyurethane film is widely used to protect other vehicle components susceptible to mechanical wear. The PPF WRAP workshop offers various service options depending on the owner’s budget and specific needs. Services include partial or full front-end wrapping, protection for headlights only, or comprehensive body wrapping.

The choice of headlight film in Chicago is to be made in accordance with Illinois state law. As per the traffic code, no vehicles should be operated with anything, including smoke, over the headlights or taillights. Front headlights can be white, yellow, or amber, and taillights should produce a red light visible at least 500 feet.

PPF Expert Robert

When picking a coating for headlights, you have to consider the light transmission coefficient. The products of industry leader XPEL contain high-quality polyurethane and undergo laboratory testing to ensure brightness and beam focus. To check whether the material is reliable, look for visual distortions: the movie must not create a lens effect or change the color temperature of the LEDs. Experts will assist in choosing a solution that offers durable paintwork and headlights, meeting all local technical standards.

Other choices

In addition to traditional film, there are various other methods available on the market for protecting headlights. A popular alternative is applying ceramic coatings or special varnishes, which create a hard chemical barrier and protect the plastic from clouding. However, such solutions are inferior in impact resistance to professional coatings from XPEL, 3M, or STEK. Unlike a thin ceramic layer, a specialized film acts as a dense, elastic shield that effectively absorbs gravel impacts and protects the optics.

Ready-to-use DIY kits are often found on marketplaces, but working on headlights requires sterile conditions and experience. Lack of proper equipment leads to defects: bubbles, dust particles, and creases at the edges. Manufacturers’ statistics confirm that most problems arise from installation errors, not material quality. PPF WRAP technicians guarantee a clean application and proper light transmission, eliminating the risks typical of DIY projects.

FAQ

Do you install colored film on headlights?

Yes, at the PPF WRAP workshop, technicians apply professional film to headlights and taillights using colored and tinted films. The customer works with an expert to select the desired shade from the product lines of leading brands, after which the specialists carry out a high-quality installation.

Is it legal for road use?

The use of window films in Chicago and the state of Illinois is regulated by the traffic code, which requires maintaining factory lighting specifications for safety. According to regulations, headlights must emit white or yellow light, and taillights must emit red light. To guarantee your customization remains within technical standards and does not attract unnecessary attention from traffic police, PPF WRAP technicians help you select solutions with high light transmission.

Is colored film mainly for style or protection?

Modern solutions combine both functions. Unlike vinyl alternatives, professional polyurethane offers high impact resistance, acting as an elastic shield against gravel and sandblasting. You get a radical exterior upgrade while simultaneously protecting your expensive headlights from chips, chemical burns, and clouding.

Can it be used on tail lights?

Rear light tinting is a styling trend that lends the optics a more aggressive or dark expression. We also have a special selection of films that help to keep the brightness of the brake lights and turn lights. The professional installation will provide a smooth, wrinkle-free finish that will keep your vehicle’s signals visible to other road users at any time of day.
