2025 Ford Explorer PPF Case Study: Full-Front Protection for a Chicago Family SUV

This 2025 Ford Explorer ST-Line arrived at our Chicago shop with new Space White Metallic paint. The owner lives in Norridge and uses the SUV for work, school trips, and errands.

It also spends time on I-90 and Chicago-area highways. That made the front bumper, hood, fenders, and headlights the main concern. The owner wanted fewer early chips without paying to cover every painted panel.

Our team completed the work at 3621 N Harlem Ave, Chicago, IL 60634, inside the Tinting Chicago facility. The shop serves nearby Dunning and Norridge, plus Harwood Heights and Chicago’s northwest side.

Ford lists the 2025 Explorer at 198.7 inches long with a 119.1-inch wheelbase. Space White Metallic was added for the 2025 model year and is offered on the ST-Line.

Why the Owner Wanted PPF Early

The Explorer didn’t have any significant paint damage when it got here. The owner keeps cars for many years and knows that small scratches can accumulate quickly.

Using Chicago highways can cause the front of a vehicle to be exposed to gravel, dirt, insects, and salt during the winter. The Explorer’s wide hood also faces a lot of that debris.

The aim was not to have the car in perfect condition.

Explorer owners often compare PPF with ceramic coating. In one recent Ford Explorer ST discussion on Reddit, a Chicagoland owner wrote:

Why We Chose Full Front PPF

The size of the hood influenced the decision. A Partial Front kit would not cover most of that panel, so it would be vulnerable to getting chipped. It would also have created a line of film on the paint.

We can cover the hood with one full piece using Full Front PPF. It also provided the same amount of protection to both front fenders. These are the key components of our Full Front PPF package.

Dmytro, the installer for this job, suggested using full panels because this huge SUV is on the highway multiple days a week. The package needed to fit the route.

Why We Added Custom Pieces

The front package dealt with the impact of the road. Three extra features included for everyday family use.

Mirror caps can get small rocks and marks from parking. In winter, the front rocker sections get dirt from the tires. The back luggage strip prevents bags, sports equipment, and grocery bins from causing scratches.

These parts protected the most worn areas without covering the entire car. Door cups and door edges were not included in this project.

Why XPEL ULTIMATE PLUS Clear Gloss

The owner liked Space White Metallic and did not want a satin or matte look. Clear gloss film kept the factory finish.

XPEL states that ULTIMATE PLUS helps protect paint from gravel, bug acids, bird droppings, chips, and scratches. Its topcoat can self-heal light scratches and swirl marks with heat. PPF cannot stop every hard hit, but it can take damage that might reach the paint.

Clear gloss also made sense for a front-only job. Satin film on the front would not match the gloss on the doors and rear panels.

Installation Notes

One complete sheet was fixed to the hood. We placed the film on the edges so that there was no line going across the panel. The bumper required careful attention around the grille, sensors, lights, and lower openings. After that, we put protective covers on the fenders, headlights, mirrors, rocker sections, and loading strip.

Final Result

This Explorer now has PPF on the main front impact areas, including the mirrors, front rocker areas, and rear loading edge.

The owner didn’t pick the least expensive or the biggest package. Choosing Full Front PPF was the most practical option between the two. It provided protection for the big hood and front body panels without having to cover the whole car with film at a higher cost.

The Ford Explorer was well-protected for driving on Norridge streets, Chicago roads, and area highways.
