2026 Audi Q8 Full Car PPF Case Study: Preserving Waitomo Blue Metallic

The owner of this 2026 Audi Q8 called us a few days after he brought the SUV home.

He loved the Waitomo Blue Metallic paint. He worried about highway miles, tight garages, valet service, and regular washes.

His first idea was Full Front PPF.

“I know the front gets most of the rock chips. I just don’t want the rest of the car to look worn before I’m ready to replace it.”

That last part changed the plan.

He lives in Hinsdale and drives about 12,000 miles each year. Many trips take him on I-88 and I-294. He also uses the Q8 for work and airport trips. He plans to keep it for at least seven years.

Why Full Front Was Not Enough

The full front PPF would have covered the whole bumper, entire hood, front fenders, and headlights for protection. It was a great response for the rock chips.

The owner had other things to worry about.

People walk near the doors in city parking garages. The SUV is used by valet staff. Bags cross the cargo edge. The roof can be located under the trees. He was also concerned about the streaks left on the car’s side panels after washing.

The front package was unable to cover those areas.

The decision was not made because of the Q8’s price. It was suitable for what he needed and for his plan that lasts seven years.

What We Protected

The Full Car package included all the painted parts of the car, as well as the mirror caps and headlights. We also put film on all four door edges and the strip on the back of the car.

In narrow city spaces, the edges of the door were important. The luggage strip prevents scratches from suitcases and work bags.

The total cost was $5,740, with $5,500 for the Full Car PPF and an additional $240 for the add-ons.

Why We Kept the Factory Gloss

He bought this Q8 mainly because of the Waitomo Blue color. Audi is also displaying the 2026 Q8 in this factory color on its website in the US.

We considered a matte finish, but it altered the car too drastically. He desired the identical shade of blue and the identical brightness.

We decided on using STEK DYNOshield Clear Gloss.

STEK calls DYNOshield a shiny clear film with a water-resistant top layer and the ability to heal itself. This product is designed to cover up rock chips and scratches while maintaining a glossy factory paint finish.

Our installer, Dmytro, stated:

“To make a Q8 look good, all the small parts like bumpers, corners, handles, and edges need to be as clean as the big panels.”

How We Checked Waitomo Blue

The film was not approved based on shop lights alone.

We put a small amount of paint on the wall, looked at it in both light and shade, and compared it to the black border.

The transparent film maintained the blue color and metallic appearance.

Dmytro explained:

“I checked Waitomo Blue outside before we approved the film. Almost any clear sample can look good under bright shop lights. Outside, I can see if the blue still has depth and if the metal flake still moves in the light.

“The owner did not want the Q8 to look covered in plastic. My job was to keep the film quiet. When the car moved from sun to shade, it still had to look like Audi paint.”

Where to Apply PPF on Your Car

From Large Panels to Small Edges

On Monday morning, the Q8 arrived at our Naperville shop. Before the film was put on, our team washed it, removed the paint and fixed some small marks. We began with the hood, roof, doors, and quarter panels. The curved shape, openings, sensors, and lower edges of both bumpers caused them to take longer to make.

The mirror covers, edges of the doors, back of the car, and strip on the luggage were added afterward. On the fourth morning, we inspected the edges and spaces between panels. After that, we took the Q8 outside to see the color one more time.

Final Result

The Q8 left our shop with clear film across the full painted body.

Waitomo Blue Metallic still looked like the color the owner chose. The doors, roof, rear panels, and cargo area now had the same type of protection as the front.

Full Front would have solved one part of his problem.

Full Car PPF matched the way he planned to use and keep the Q8.

Installation at Our Palatine Shop

Our team checked the paint under bright shop lights first. We found a few light delivery marks and cleaned them before the film went on.

We washed the Q7 and prepared the hood, bumper, front fenders, headlights, mirror caps, and A-pillars.

Eric applied a single, continuous sheet of film to the hood. There wasn’t a single line on the panel.

The bumper took longer to wrap due to its openings, curves, decorative elements, and lower corners. After finishing the front end, we applied the film to the door inserts, door edges, and the rear trunk strip.

The Q7 spent the night at our facility in Palatine. The morning after, we examined the corners of the bumper, edges of the hood, headlights, mirrors, doors, A-pillars, and cargo area.

Before the owners returned, we checked to ensure that every edge was smooth.
