2026 BMW X7 Custom PPF Case Study: Protection Built Around Family Use

The person who owns the 2026 BMW X7 car did not come to our shop with a specific plan in mind. He visited our Palatine store and inquired about the price of protecting the front of his new SUV.

At first, it seemed like the best option was to go with a Full Front package. We then inquired about how his family used the X7.

The SUV carried children, sports bags, suitcases, groceries, and a stroller. The front needed protection, but it was not the only area at risk. Door edges, rocker panels, and the rear loading area faced contact almost every day. So, we built a custom PPF plan instead of using one standard package.

The X7 is the largest SUV in the BMW line. It is 203.6 inches long and has a 122.2-inch wheelbase. Its size gives a family more room, but it also creates more painted surface near shoes, bags, doors, and road debris.

I was the first person to install this X7.

I didn’t ask the owner how much film he wanted to start. I requested him to demonstrate how his family utilized the SUV.

He unlocked the back doors. His kids got close to the car’s rocker panels. Their shoes might touch the painted area under the doors.

After that, he lifted the back of the vehicle. He pointed out where they stored suitcases and sports bags before loading them into the cargo area. The edge of the opening had already been painted, making it a clear danger.

I also inspected the handles and edges of the outside doors. The X7 is so wide that it’s possible for a door to bump into a garage wall or another car when parked in a tight space.

The Areas That Changed Our Plan

We identified four main types of damage that were important for this family:

Road damage: Small rocks, salt, bugs, and dirt on the front of the car
Damage upon entering: Shoe prints and dirt from the road on the lower parts of the car.
Door damage: Nail marks and light contact on the edges of the door.
Loading damage: Scratches from bags, boxes, and strollers by the back of the car

A basic Full Front package would keep the front fenders safe. It doesn’t include the bottom part of the car, the sides of the doors, or the back loading area.

Full Car PPF includes coverage for all those parts. The owner didn’t need film on every part of the car like the doors, back corners, or roof.

Customized coverage allowed us to shift some of his budget from less risky panels to places that his family used every day.

Why We Kept Full Hood Coverage

A partial hood kit would only cover some of the hood, leaving most of it open. The film line might also be easier to see on Alpine White after dust or road salt accumulated near the edge.

We selected a single piece for the hood. The bumper, headlights, and mirror caps were also covered with film because they are directly hit by the road.

We didn’t put on the entire front fenders. This meant that there was more money in the budget to spend on the rocker panels and areas for family use.

Why We Used STEK DYNOshield

Alpine White has a bright factory finish. We wanted a clear film that would preserve its gloss without making the protected panels look rough or cloudy.

STEK describes DYNOshield as an 8-mil gloss PPF with a water-repelling top layer. It is made to resist stains, rock chips, and scratches. Fine surface marks can also fade with heat or hot water.

How We Split the Work

Our team cleaned the X7 and inspected the paint under the lights in the shop. First, we put on the entire hood, bumper, headlights, and mirror caps. After that, we put protection on the lower parts of the car and the handles on the doors.

We completed the edges of the door and the strip on the back for the luggage. Following that, we inspected every corner and panel line.

The owner got the X7 on the second day. The practical work lasted for around one and a half days, but leaving it to rest overnight allowed the film to set properly.

What the $4,250 Covered

The last bill included the custom film plan, paint prep, labor, and a check the next morning.

Full-body protection was not included. It did not have a standard front package design either.

The X7 got the most film in areas where the owner faced the highest risk: the front impact areas, below the doors, around the handles, along the door edges, and at the cargo opening.
