Owner: “Should I pay more for a factory color if I plan to cover it?”

Forum member: “Use a dark base under a dark film. White paint may show at the panel gaps.”

Owner: “Why not use vinyl for the color change?”

Another member: “Vinyl changes the color. It does not give the same rock-chip protection as PPF.”

Not every owner received a single answer from the forum. Some members believed that the front PPF and vinyl were sufficient. Other people were concerned about protecting their entire body.

The decision he made was based on how long he planned to keep the car and how much he valued the original paint underneath the new color.

Why Full-Car Coverage Was the Right Choice

A Partial Front or Full Front package would have kept the main road-impact areas safe.

That would be a good idea for a owner who wanted to keep the original paint on their car and just needed protection against rocks and chips on the highway. The order didn’t make sense because the customer wanted the entire car to be a different color.

Local color panels also did not work well. The owner didn’t like the idea of a two-tone Model S. They wanted the hood, doors, quarter panels, liftback, and bumpers to all have the same finish.

We also discussed how using a combination of vinyl and clear PPF could create additional challenges for the job. The owner needs to have two materials, two types of edges, and two types of future care. Repairing a damaged area might need attention to more than one layer.

Full Color PPF simplified the plan. One substance altered the color and provided protection. For this Model S, the final approved price was $9,800.

Five Days in Our Shop

The job took five business days, or about 42 shop hours.

Day 1: Inspection and Preparation

We examined each panel with bright lights. We discovered some small delivery marks and fixed them before the film went on.

Day 2: Hood and Front End

The Solid Black film needed to be stretched evenly to keep the shine and color consistent on the whole panel. Excess tension in a single spot could distort the reflections or change how the finish looks.

The bumper also had many bends and holes, so it required more time to make than a flat panel.

Day 3: Doors and Side Panels

Before we placed the edges, we made sure to check each panel next to the other. The director position needed to be consistent on both sides of the car.

Day 4: Rear Body

We put material on the back part of the car including the sides, door, and back.

Our team also inspected the film close to the lights, trim, panel gaps, and lower bumper areas. If the film is not in the correct position, these points can reveal the original factory paint.

Day 5: Final Checks

We looked at the sides, corners, gaps between panels, and the entire surface.

After that, we took the car outside to see its color in the daylight. This final inspection allowed us to detect small marks or color changes that were not as visible under the lights in the store.
