2026 Tesla Model X Custom PPF Case Study: Protection for Road, Door, and Cargo Contact

The Model X in Stealth Grey was brought in without a prior appointment. The customer stopped by on his way home from work in Palatine.

One of our former customers had told the owner about us. So the customer showed us photos of his garage and asked us to take a look at how the “Falcon Wing” doors open before we started discussing the window tint.

Q1: Was This Mainly a Rock-Chip Job?

No.

The front part of the car, including the bumper, hood, fenders, and headlights, were exposed to stones, bugs, and road salt.

Every day, his kids would use the back doors, and he would frequently carry suitcases and sports bags. The bottom of the sides had winter grit on them, and the back loading edge had contact with cargo.

The six-seat Model X from Tesla has a total cargo space of up to 94.5 cubic feet. That made it easy to hit the rear bumper edge.

Q2: Why Not Stop at Full Front PPF?

Full Front PPF covers the bumper, full hood, front fenders, and headlights. Our site lists it from $1,600 to $2,500 or more, based on size and panel shape.

It would not cover:

  • rocker panels and lower doors;
  • A-pillars;
  • door edges;
  • mirror caps;
  • the rear luggage strip.

Those areas matched his routine, so we built a custom plan.

The Four Protection Zones

For the client, these were the main goals.

1. Front impact zone

We protected the bumper, entire front of the car, front side panels, and headlights. This area experienced the most loose objects from the road.

2. Tire-spray zone

We installed rocker panels and lower door film to protect against salt, sand, and small stones kicked up by the tires.

3. Door-contact zone

We put protection on the edges of four doors, both mirror caps, and the A-pillars to prevent scratches from parking and daily use.

4. Cargo zone

A strip on the back of the car protected the top of the bumper from getting scratched by bags and suitcase wheels.

What the Tesla Forum Added

Owner: “Do we need to add film to the lower side of the Model X?”

Member: “The majority of damage from road debris is usually found near the bottom of the door.”

That was the same as what we saw on the car and in the owner’s winter-use plan. It showed that the bottom doors needed more attention than the top doors.

Robert’s Notes From the Shop Floor

“I didn’t originally think that every edge of the Falcon Wing doors needed film. I checked the gaps and looked at the garage photos to see where the doors might make contact. We only covered the spots that might touch. We made sure to avoid covering sensors, seals, and moving parts.”

How We Protect Every Part of Your Car

See real PPF installations on individual body panels. We show our process, common errors, and professional tips so you know exactly how your vehicle is protected.

Where to Apply PPF on Your Car

Why We Used STEK DYNOshield

The owner liked the factory gloss of the Stealth Grey paint, so he did not want colored, matte, or satin film.

We picked STEK DYNOshield because it preserved the original appearance of the Stealth Grey Model X. The shiny surface looked just like the original paint, and the water-resistant top layer made it easier to clean the covered parts. The film can also make small scratches less visible by using heat.

Robert also enjoyed how the film was presented in this special package. We applied it to big flat surfaces, curvy body parts, and small spots on the edges.

Three Days in Our Shop

  1. We looked at the Stealth Grey paint, washed the car, and got the panels ready. Then we put film on the front part of the car, including the hood, bumper, fenders, headlights, and A-pillars.
  2. On the second day, we concentrated on mirrors, rockers, lower doors, and door edges. After the film was placed, we checked each door.
  3. After that, we put on the luggage strap, looked at all the edges, and tried the doors one more time before picking it up.

Our team also checked the film near seals and panel gaps. We made sure no edge could affect normal door use.

What This PPF Plan Cannot Prevent

The film does not make the Falcon Wing doors safe from a hard hit against a wall, shelf, or garage door.

It also cannot prevent:

  • dents from strong impacts;
  • damage caused by ice around the doors;
  • cuts from sharp cargo;
  • wheel or glass damage;
  • scratches on panels that were not covered.

The owner still needs to watch the space around the doors and clear ice or snow before use.

Final Result

The Stealth Grey Model X was covered in film on the parts that had the most contact with the road, passengers, and cargo.

The front was completely protected. The lower parts were protected from debris thrown by tires, and the edges of the doors and A-pillars were covered with film to protect them from daily wear and tear. The luggage strip covered the main area where items were loaded.

The custom plan provided better coverage than a front-only package without the high cost of a Full Car PPF.
