STEK – The PPF Installers Choose for Their Own Cars

STEK is a premium paint protection film (PPF) brand known for strong installer preference, excellent satin finishes, and reliable performance in harsh conditions like Chicago winters.

When a new paint protection film (PPF) comes through our shop, there’s one question we always ask: would we put this on our own cars? With STEK, the answer across our install team has been consistently YES.

That’s not a marketing claim – this response comes from working with the film every day in real installations. We install different films on complex panels, on high-end vehicles, and in conditions that push PPF to its limit. It would be honest to say that STEK isn’t usually the brand clients ask for. XPEL has stronger consumer recognition. Avery Dennison is known for finish consistency. STEK has something different, and it’s a reputation among professional installers who have worked with every major PPF brand and make their choices based on real-world performance. Why do PPF WRAP installers choose STEK? Read on to learn more about these paint protection films.

What Is Stek and Where It Comes From?

STEK is a South Korean PPF manufacturer operating under SWM International, one of the largest specialty film producers in Asia. They’ve been manufacturing PPF since 2011 and entered the North American market seriously around 2017. They’re not a startup, and they’re not a rebranded generic film. STEK develops its own TPU chemistry, its own topcoat formulations, and its own adhesive systems in-house.

What that means in practice is that every layer of a STEK film is engineered to work together. The topcoat, the TPU, and the adhesive are developed as a system. That integration shows up in two specific areas that matter to professional installers: how the film behaves during installation, and how it performs after a Chicago winter.

STEK Insights from Robert

There are many excellent reviews of STEK products, but true insights always come from people who handle the film every day. So, here are fair observations from Robert, one of our senior PPF installers:

“When I work with PPF every day, I don’t really think in terms of product brochures. I think in terms of how each film behaves once it leaves the shop. STEK is one of the brands which I install regularly.

Each film in STEK’s lineup has a clear purpose, and I can choose a PPF product for every driver. Here’s how I personally approach each film in real installs.

DYNOshield – My Default Gloss Protection Film

DYNOshield is the film I install most often, and the one I’d put on my own daily driver without thinking twice.

It’s an 8-mil TPU gloss PPF with:

  • Hydrophobic topcoat (~115° contact angle)
  • 99% UV rejection
  • Self-healing around 120°F
  • 10–12 year warranty depending on coverage

What matters most to me is long-term stability. In real winter conditions, especially road salt, slush, and temperature swings, it stays predictable. I’ve seen it handle close to -20°F without edge lift issues. That’s why I recommend it for vehicles that are truly daily-driven and exposed year-round. I often install this STEK film on:

  • Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban (especially suburban family and highway use)
  • BMW X5, X7, 5 Series, and 7 Series daily commuters
  • Mercedes-Benz GLE and GLS used for long-distance driving
  • Rivian R1T and R1S for all-season adventure use

DYNOmatte – The Only Satin Film I Trust for OEM-Like Finishes

DYNOmatte is what I use when a client wants satin or matte but still expects a factory-level look. Its biggest strength is how closely it matches OEM matte finishes. It behaves very similarly to BMW Frozen paints, Mercedes Designo matte, and Porsche Chalk. Technically, it still gives full protection:

  • Self-healing TPU construction
  • Hydrophobic surface
  • UV resistance built in

What I notice in real installs is that the finish is not overly flat or artificially glossy.

I recommend DYNOmatte for:

  • BMW M3, M4, M5 (especially Frozen shades)
  • Mercedes-AMG GLE 63, GLS 63, and G-Class matte builds
  • Porsche 911 and Taycan (especially Chalk or special-order matte colors)
  • Audi RS6, RS7, and RSQ8 satin conversions

One of my friends actually runs DYNOmatte on his BMW M340i in Mineral White, and he is more than happy. It behaves consistently in colder months, not only in ideal conditions.

DYNOprism / DYNOshift – When the Car Needs to Stand Out

These are not everyday installs for me. I treat DYNOprism and DYNOshift as specialty films for clients who want something visually unique. These are color-shifting TPU films that change depending on angle and lighting. Core specs:

  • 8-mil TPU protection layer
  • Gloss and satin options
  • Full chip resistance
  • Iridescent, shifting color effect

I used these STEK wraps on:

  • Exotic builds like Lamborghini Huracán or McLaren 720S
  • Chevrolet Corvette C8
  • Tesla Model 3 and Model S custom color projects

These are not “daily driver” films. They are for clients who specifically want attention and uniqueness.

AIRFORCE / FORCE Color PPF – Practical Full Color Change

When a client wants a full color change, I often recommend AIRFORCE instead of a vinyl wrap.

The reason is durability. Plus, it’s difficult to compete with these features:

  •  Wide range of colors and specialty finishes
  • True impact resistance (unlike vinyl wrap)
  • Dry-apply adhesive system

From an installer’s standpoint, the dry-apply system also makes alignment more controlled, especially on larger panels where wet wraps tend to shift.

I recommend AIRFORCE for:

  • Tesla Model 3, Model Y, and Model S full color changes
  • BMW 3 Series, 4 Series, and M340i cosmetic conversions
  • Mercedes C-Class and E-Class color transformations
  • Audi A4, A5, S5, RS3, RS5 builds

DYNOmight – Maximum Protection for Extreme Use

DYNOmight is the film I use when standard protection isn’t enough. This is a 10-mil film, heavier and more impact-resistant than standard TPU films. I only recommend it for specific use cases.

  • Track vehicles with high-speed debris exposure
  • Cars regularly driven on gravel or rural roads
  • High-impact front-end protection needs

I install DYNOmight on:

  • Porsche 911 GT3 / GT3 RS track-driven builds
  • Ford Mustang GT and Shelby GT500
  • Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 track-focused setups

It’s not necessary for most street-driven vehicles, but when it is needed, it performs in conditions where thinner films simply wear out faster.

Who Chooses STEK at PPF WRAP Shop

STEK clients are somewhat different from the clients who choose XPEL or Avery Dennison.

Clients referred by installers. A significant portion of our STEK installs comes from referrals. These are car owners whose friends had STEK installed somewhere, those who asked their detailer or mechanic what film the shop used on their own vehicles. Installer word-of-mouth drives STEK popularity.

Factory-matte vehicle owners. BMW M owners with Frozen finishes, Porsche owners in Chalk or Crayon, Mercedes AMG GT owners in Designo matte need a satin film that calibrates correctly to their factory sheen. They’ve often been told by their dealership that matte finishes can’t be polished and must be protected from day one. DYNOmatte is the film we recommend for this specific situation.

Owners of geometrically complex vehicles. Some vehicles are simply harder to wrap than others. The Rivian R1T has tricky fender geometry. The Kia EV9 has deep body sculpting across the lower doors. The Range Rover Sport has a complex A-pillar and mirror base transition. We use STEK on these models for a flawless result.

When We Don’t Recommend STEK PPF

We install STEK at all of our locations and consider it one of the best paint protection films available. But it’s not always the right choice. We also work with many other brands, and in some cases, an alternative makes more sense. When STEK is not your PPF:

You Want a Transferable Warranty

STEK warranties are designed for the original owner. If you plan to sell your vehicle and want the paint protection film warranty to transfer to the next owner, XPEL is a better choice.

You Need a Specific Color PPF Immediately

STEK offers color PPF options, but the available palette is more limited compared to XPEL color films. If you have a very specific color in mind, you will need a different brand.

You Want Maximum Clarity on Black Paint (Show-Level)

STEK DYNOshield performs well on dark paint in normal conditions. However, under very harsh lighting (like direct LED inspection on black paint), XPEL Ultimate Plus can show slightly better optical clarity due to its topcoat.

Recent STEK PPF Cases

BMW X3 M Competition (Tanzanite Blue) – Daily driver, lots of highway miles. We did our Chicago Winter Package plus extra rear coverage since those roads can be brutal. After a full winter, the hood was still spotless, and all the salt mess rinsed right off. The owner told us he wishes he’d done it sooner.

2025 Toyota Sienna (Midnight Black Metallic) – A busy family van, parked outside every day, lots of kid-related chaos. We protected the front and added door edge guards (because parking lots are the real danger here). Six months later, still clean, no dings, and they came back to book another car.

Toyota Supra MK4 (Super White) – This one came from a collector who barely drives it, but wanted serious protection for when he does. We wrapped the whole car in DYNOmight (the thick 10-mil film). After sitting through winter, it came out looking perfect, and the owner admitted it was the first time he could actually enjoy driving it on the highway without stressing about every rock.

The owner was pleased, “It finally feels like I can drive the car the way it’s meant to be driven, not just worry about keeping it perfect.”

FAQ

How long does STEK PPF last?

The manufacturer offers a 10-year warranty for STEK DYNOshield and DYNOmattep series, covering yellowing, cracking, bubbling, and delamination. In Chicago conditions, a properly installed STEK film holds up well through the full warranty period.

Is STEK PPF good for Chicago winters?

Yes, STEK is one of the top paint protection films that is ideal for harsh Chicago winters. STEK’s adhesive system stays flexible at sub-zero temperatures, which is where edge lift failures happen on cheaper films. The low-temperature self-healing topcoat also continues working in any season.

How does STEK compare to XPEL?

STEK and XPEL are both premium 8-mil films. XPEL has a stronger consumer brand, a transferable warranty, and a wider color PPF palette. STEK has a stronger reputation among installers for ease of installation, film handling and satin finish calibration on factory matte vehicles.

Is STEK available at all PPF WRAP locations?

Yes. We stock DYNOshield and DYNOmatte at Grand Ave, Harlem Ave, Palatine, and Naperville. Ask about DYNOsport color availability at your nearest location, as specific shades may vary by stock.

Can STEK PPF be applied to any vehicle?

Yes. STEK PPF can be installed on most vehicles, including cars, SUVs, trucks, and electric vehicles. Pre-cut templates are available for many models, and custom installations can be done for complex or modified vehicles.
