UPPF Under the Squeegee: What We Learned After 100+ Installs

Ask a car owner what PPF brands they know, and you will probably hear two names: XPEL and maybe 3M. Ask an experienced installer the same question, and the list gets longer – SunTek, Avery Dennison, STEK, Llumar. But even among professionals, UPPF rarely makes that first-mention list. That’s a mistake, and one we made ourselves before we actually put the film on a car.

This is a brand with nearly three decades of manufacturing behind it, OEM-level quality credentials, and a product range that covers everything a Chicagoland driver could need, from invisible rock chip protection on a daily commuter to a full color transformation on a weekend car. UPPF and Its PPF Lineup

UPPF splits its range into three main product families, each designed for a different type of protection.

Hammerhead is the clear PPF line, the standard invisible protection most people install to protect the paint. It includes Hammerhead Clear (HC1001), Pro (HC1002), and Max (HC1003), plus Satin (HC1005) and Matte (HC1006) finishes. All Hammerhead films are made with Lubrizol aliphatic TPU and UPPF’s Platicoat top coat, which gives self-healing, water repellency, and scratch resistance. The clear films are typically 8 mil, with 9-mil Pro options for extra durability.

Cobia is the color PPF range, made for full color change plus protection. It ideally protects against chips and wear as well. It comes in five finish types: Pure (gloss), Satin, Metallic, Magic (color-shift), and Texture. It uses the same TPU base and Platicoat top coat as Hammerhead, so performance is strong.

Manta covers glass and optical protection – windshield film, sunroof protection, headlights, and ceramic window tint. Together, these three lines let installers offer full-vehicle protection from one brand.

Where UPPF Outperforms Other Brands

Our PPF installers often hear the same question: “Is UPPF really better than XPEL or STEK?” Honestly, it depends on what you care about. But after hundreds of installs in our Chicago shops, we’ve found three areas where UPPF genuinely outperforms the others:

1. UPPF’s top coat is different from other PPF brands

Most PPF top coats are soft and elastic. They self‑heal, sure, but they can feel gummy, attract dust, and sometimes stain from bird droppings or hard water.

UPPF’s Platicoat is different. It’s engineered with shark‑skin micro‑structures and is ultra‑hard, low‑drag, and highly hydrophobic. Here’s what that means for a vehicle:

• Harder surface – resists etching from bug guts and tree sap.
• Smoother feel – doesn’t trap dust like softer films.
• Still self‑heals – minor scratches disappear with heat (sunlight or warm water).

2. UPPF has a rich color palette

Here’s where UPPF leaves the big names behind. Most PPF brands give you clear, matte, satin or maybe 5‑10 color options. UPPF’s Cobia Color series has 77 shades.
That includes:

• Solid gloss colors (OEM‑style)
• Metallic finishes
• Satin/matte tones
• Color‑shift/chameleon

All these options offer full TPU protection. Vinyl wraps have even more shades but offer zero rock chip protection. UPPF gives you both.

3. Zero residue protection

This is a huge question for anyone leasing a car or worried about resale value. UPPF’s Invisiglue is a low‑tack, repositionable adhesive that cures to a strong final bond but removes cleanly even after years of installation.

We tested a 3‑year‑old UPPF hood wrap. Peeling it off was like lifting a sticker off glass- absolutely zero residue and damage. With other films, you often need more time to scrape off the glue.

Who Chooses UPPF? (And Who Should Stick with XPEL)

Not every client needs UPPF. Here’s how to understand whether it’s your PPF brand ot not.

Choose UPPF if you want:

• A full color change that actually protects. UPPF’s Cobia series (77 colors) gives you both looks and protection. If you’re tired of seeing vinyl peel after one winter, this is your film.
• A harder, more stain‑resistant top coat. Platicoat feels slicker than most competitors and shrugs off bird droppings, tree sap, and road salt. Perfect for daily drivers parked outside.
• Clean removal years later. Leasing? Planning to sell? UPPF’s Invisiglue comes off without residue.

Stick with XPEL or SunTek if you:

• Just want a clear bra on the front clip and already trust the big names. UPPF’s clear film is excellent, but the brand recognition gap matters to some buyers.
• Need an installer in a rural area where only XPEL dealers exist. UPPF is growing, but not everywhere yet.
