PPF PortfolioMost car owners believe headlights turn yellow because they are dirty. But modern headlight lenses are made of polycarbonate, a durable thermoplastic. Manufacturers apply a thin, hard UV-protective coating at the factory to protect this plastic from the sun. But this coating ages because of:

Putting film on headlights is very different from working on a bumper. The job is more demanding because the film has to be completely clear. Even small flaws, like dust or adhesive issues, become obvious when the lights are on. That’s why we handle headlights with extra care.

Step 1. Decontamination and de-waxing
Headlights are often covered in layers of old wax or ceramic spray. We use a special grease remover and clay bar treatment. Unlike paint, we cannot correct deep scratches out of a headlight without removing material. If the lens is already hazy, we discuss options with the client before proceeding.
Step 2. Assessing the shape
Most modern headlights are not flat; they can be domed or have sharp fangs (look at modern Cadillacs or Peugeots). So, we need to determine the anchor point – this is the highest point where the film is first tacked down. From here, we work outward from the film in all directions.
Step 3. The slip vs. tack balance

Step 4. Controlled heat application
Because PPF has memory, it wants to return to its flat shape. On a curved lens, we use a heat gun to carefully soften the urethane. This allows the film to sit naturally over the curves. Note that if you use too much heat, you burn the film. If you use too little, the film will create small tunnels of air at the edges an hour after the car is finished.
Step 5. Curing
Next, we leave the vehicle to cure. The film needs time to evaporate the remaining moisture. After a few days in a controlled heat, the film becomes exactly the same as the bare lens, offering 100% clarity with 100% protection.
We have seen the results of rushed work or DIY kits on headlights. And here are the flaws we face most often:
❌ Optical distortion (orange peel). If you use low-quality film or stretch it too much, the surface becomes textured and scatters the light, so it looks foggy even when it is new.
✅ We use high-grade, optical clarity film and control stretch to maintain a perfectly smooth light path.
❌ Lack of adhesive. If you overstretch the film on steep curves, the adhesive loses contact with the lens and creates a permanent silver bubble that ruins the beam pattern.
✅ We stretch and adjust the material in several directions so the adhesive bonds evenly along the whole curve.
❌ Dust and dirt. Headlights attract dust easily because they build up static. Even one small particle under the film is immediately visible.
✅ We use anti-static sprays and ionized air blowers during the final prep to keep the surface surgically clean.
❌ Edge lifting. Headlights get hot. If the edges aren’t sealed properly, heat cycles cause the film to shrink back and peel, exposing the lens to UV within months.
✅ We use primerless edge adhesives on wrapped edges to create a strong, lasting bond, even when temperatures change.
