Step 1. Micro-Decontamination
Mirrors are the epicenter of bug acid. When a bug hits a mirror at 70 mph, the acidic enzymes can actually etch into the clear coat within hours.
We use a specialized bug-dissolving enzyme cleaner and then a fine-grade clay bar. The seam between the painted cap and the black plastic trim deserves special attention. Any dirt along the seam will lift the film within 48 hours.

Step 2. The “Palm” Position
We don’t slap the film on. We use the “palm technique.”
Step 3. Steam and Stretch Stage
Mirrors often require steam. Steam softens urethane better than a dry heat gun. It literally melts the film and allows us to pull it over the shoulders of the mirror housing. We aim for a 15–20% stretch. Anything beyond 30% will cause adhesive distortion.
Step 4. Trimming the Edges
If your mirror has a built-in LED blinker, the film must be trimmed with surgical precision. We use knifeless tape whenever possible. We lay the tape down first, apply the film over it, and pull the filament to cut the film from the inside out.
Step 5.The Under-Edge Seal
The wind hits a mirror from the front, but it creates a vacuum effect at the back. This vacuum wants to remove the film from the edges. We wrap the film roughly 2–3mm over the edge of the painted cap and tuck it into the gap where the mirror housing meets the motor assembly.

Too much tension thins the film and causes “fingers” (radiating lift lines). Moisture can follow, damaging cameras or turn signals.

✅ We wrap 4–6 mm into the hinge gap and heat-seal for a waterproof barrier.

Tiny particles under the film show as bright or dark spots, especially at night.
✅ We fully decontaminate the surface (iron remover, clay, optical-grade wipe) in a clean, well-lit space.
❌ Excessive heat on plastic housings
Overheating clouds the film, creates stretch marks, or bonds adhesive too strongly, risking clear coat damage.
✅ We carefully monitor the heat at a low setting and check the folds after every pass.
