A roof rack or bike rack can greatly increase the usefulness of your car. You can transport bikes, skis, a cargo box, tools, or weekend gear without having to cram everything inside. However, many car owners may later notice a problem: scratches, dull marks, and small paint damage where the rack comes into contact with the body. But you can prevent most rack damage if you protect the right spots before the first long trip.
A Real Case From Our Shop
Hi, it’s me Jada, I’m one of the PPF installers in our shop. A few months back, a customer brought in a Subaru Outback. Car very clean. Car for the family, car for weekends, car for bike trips. You’re familiar with that kind. Almost every weekend, the car’s roof rails, crossbars, and rear bike rack were used.
The paint appeared to be in good condition from a distance. Not so close.
There were faint scratches close to the top of the car. The back of the car had scratches from bike tires and shoes. The edges of the hatch had some small marks from the straps. Nothing too extreme, but the owner was irritated. He stated that he always tries to be careful, but the thing still ends up getting scratched.
Yeah, I trusted him. That’s how rack damage happens. One big mistake is not always the cause. It comes from repeated small interactions. Dirt under rubber. A strap that shifts slightly while on the road. A pedal that touches the back of the car. A bike wheel that scrapes against the back of the car. It makes sense.
We washed, checked the paint, lightly polished, and applied custom clear PPF to the roof contact points, rear bumper top, hatch edge, and door sills of the Outback. The aim was easy: protect the car’s paint from damage while still being able to use the rack.
